WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Otterbein University women's soccer team tallied a memorable come-from-behind victory Tuesday evening, escaping with a 2-1 double overtime triumph at Wilmington College.
The Cardinals (9-5-1, 4-2 OAC) allowed a goal in the fifth minute of play, and fought for an equalizer over the next 83-plus minutes until freshman Madison Burchfield drilled a shot from 35 yards into the back of the net with under two and half minutes remaining.
Both teams played to a scoreless first overtime, but senior Morgan Hendrickson helped lift her team to victory with her fourth goal of the season after taking a header flick-on from Burchfield, squeezing past a defender, and scoring with 6:27 to play in the match.
Otterbein out-shot the Quakers, 20-8, and took six of the 10 corner kicks seen throughout the match.
Goalkeeper Dana Strimbu made two stops in goal while Wilmington (9-6-1, 3-3 OAC) keeper Grace Hignite finished with nine for the hosts.
Otterbein will finish out the week Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. home match against the University of Mount Union. Hendrickson and fellow seniors Amanda Case, Jill Knox, and Amanda Carlisle will be recognized prior to start time as part of Senior Day.
