Game Notes
WESTERVILLE, OHIO—Otterbein University squares off against the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace University Saturday in the Hall of Fame game on the Westerville campus. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Otterbein and Baldwin Wallace head into the game sitting in a four-way tie for fourth place, each 1-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC).
The Cardinals, coming off a 28-0 loss at John Carroll University last Saturday, find themselves in a must-win situation if they are to stay in the chase for the OAC title.
Otterbein head coach Tim Doup, in his second season at his alma mater, set the tone for the game earlier in the week.
"We are calling this grind week," Doup said. "We are going to do whatever it takes to win the game. Our staff is coming in at 5:30 in the morning and we are meeting for an hour and a half. They guys are showing up at 7 a.m. to see film, and then we are practicing in the afternoon. Staff and kids—we are asking them to go above and beyond. Everyone is going to be a little tired by the end of the week, but, hopefully, it pays off."
The Yellow Jackets, 2-1 overall, turned back Muskingum University, 23-13, last Saturday in Berea. Junior running back Nolan Sordyl, 99 yards rushing, senior linebacker David Flegal, 11 tackles, and junior linebacker Dan O'Brien, seven tackles, led BW. O'Brien was named OAC "defensive player of the week." He also had a quarterback sack, an intercepted pass and both forced and recovered a fumble.
Baldwin Wallace, under 12th-year head coach John Snell, opened the 2013 season ranked 23rd by D3football.com. The Yellow Jackets defeated Bluffton University, 52-21, Sept. 7 and then lost to John Carroll, 27-7, Sept. 14.
Last season in Berea, Otterbein senior quarterback Aaron Kingcade accounted for five touchdowns as the Cardinals upset the 15th-ranked Yellow Jackets, 38-17.
At halftime of the game with Baldwin Wallace, members of the sixth class of the Otterbein Athletic Hall of Fame will be introduced. They include Karen Beers Horvath (soccer), from Beavercreek, class of 2007; Todd Callicoat (track and field), from Coshocton, class of 1990; Dick Ruh (multiple sports), from Delaware, class of 1955; Ron Severance (football), from Westerville, class of 1992; Lauren Thompson Brown (soccer), from Blacklick, class of 2007; Ed Williams (basketball), from Westerville, class of 1978; and the 1994 men's cross country team.
