Burchfield Strikes Again as Cardinals Advance in OAC Tournament

Box Score
WESTERVILLE, Ohio – A second-half goal from freshman Madison Burchfield proved to be the difference as Otterbein University women's soccer earned a 1-0 win over visiting University of Mount Union Tuesday afternoon in OAC Tournament action.

The Cardinals, seeded fourth, advance to the semifinal round at top-seeded Capital University Thursday at 2 p.m. Otterbein improves to 12-6-1 on the season with its quarterfinal victory.

Ohio Northern University, seeded third, will play at No. 2 seed John Carroll University in the other semifinal matchup Thursday at 7 p.m. The highest remaining seed will then host the tournament championship come Saturday.

Mount Union, making its first postseason appearance since 2003, ends its season at 12-6-2 after previously setting a program record for most wins in a season.

Both teams played to a scoreless first half as only five shots were attempted throughout the opening 45 minutes. Burchfield tallied the game-winner at the 76:06 mark, heading in a corner kick from junior Ali Stone right in front of the Purple Raider goal.

The game-winning header against Mount Union is the second in as many meetings for Burchfield, who also registered the game-winning goal on nearly the exact same play back on Oct. 26 in the team's 2-1, double overtime, win over the Raiders.

Otterbein finished with a 9-4 shot advantage and Mount held a slight 5-3 edge on corner kicks. Dana Strimbu made three saves in the Otterbein goal while Maria Favorite came up with two at the other end for visitors.

The Cardinals will be looking to even the score with crosstown-rival Capital on Thursday, as the Crusaders recently emerged with a hard-fought, 1-0, win this past Saturday to capture the tournament's top seed.
