Women's Soccer Eliminated in Semifinals of OAC Tournament

Box Score
BEXLEY, Ohio – The fourth-seeded Otterbein University women's soccer team saw its 2013 season come to a close Thursday afternoon, falling 1-0 at top-seeded Capital University in the semifinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament.

The loss is the second 1-0 defeat at Capital in six days for the Cardinals, who end their season at 12-7-1 overall. The Crusaders (15-4-1), meanwhile, advance to host the tournament championship Sunday afternoon against the winner of John Carroll University and Ohio Northern University.

Capital took the lead during the 15th minute of play, watching senior Livvy Hein rebound a loose ball off a scramble and score from 15 yards out.

The Crusaders controlled most of the first half in taking the halftime lead, but the Cardinals came out and handled more of the possession throughout the second.  Sophomore Megan McCabe's sliding shot off a cross went wide in the 61st minute, and freshman Madison Burchfield had an up-closer shot blocked just one minute later.

The Cards had another opportunity with just under 20 minutes remaining on a free kick from just outside the attacking zone. Both Burchfield and Morgan Hendrickson broke free towards the net, but Capital goalkeeper Maggie Donnellan stepped forward to corral the ball.

Otterbein, playing without All-OAC defender and corner-kick specialist Alex Ancona (injury), continued to push forward down the stretch but the Crusader defense would ultimately hold.

Capital finished with an 8-5 shot margin while Otterbein took two of the three corner kicks in the match. Dana Strimbu made three saves in the Cardinal net while Donnellan had one on the opposite end.
