NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Otterbein University men's basketball team secured its first Ohio Athletic Conference win of the season Saturday afternoon, walking away with a 75-64 victory at Muskingum University.
The Cardinals, now 2-5 on the year and 1-1 in OAC play, will have the middle of next week off for final exams before traveling to the University of Mount Union Saturday afternoon. Muskingum, meanwhile, falls to 3-2 overall and 0-2 against league foes in the losing effort.
The host Muskies grabbed an early 10-3 lead, but the Cardinals used a workmanlike 10-2 spurt over the next five minutes, capped by a pair of Jason Davis free throws, to jump on top at 13-12.
Both sides traded scores throughout the rest of a close first half, with Otterbein taking a slim 26-25 edge into the break.
The contest remained a one-possession battle during the early stages of the second half before Muskingum opened a 38-34 advantage at the 15:37 mark.
The Cardinals remained close as the second half approached the midway point, eventually using yet another 10-2 scoring run to hold a 56-53 with 7:20 to go in regulation.
A three-point play from Otterbein sophomore Jake Bischoff gave the Cards a 61-59 lead with 4:20 left. The Tan and Cardinal would not relinquish the lead from that point, opening a 67-61 advantage before finishing strong.
Bischoff led the way with a game-high 20 points, going 10 of 11 at the free-throw line to help offset a 4 of 15 effort from the field. Three other Cardinals scored in double figures, with Grant Fenner tallying season-highs of 15 points and 10 rebounds while both Davis and Jake Phillis contributed 10 from the point guard spot.
Logan Kimble scored 16 to lead Muskingum, which shot just 1 of 14 from three-point range and committed six more turnovers than Otterbein.
