Cards Open Indoor Season at Capital

Final Results

BEXLEY, Ohio—The Otterbein University men's and women's track and field teams opened the indoor season at the Purple and White Invitational hosted by Capital University Saturday in Bexley.

Otterbein won four events at the meet, which was not scored. The Cardinals were not at full strength since the meet was optional, coming on the heels of finals week and after a busy fall season in which many of the student-athletes competed in cross country and football.

"I was pleased with our overall performance and liked how our kids competed," said head coach Dave Lehman. "We were mainly looking at this meet as a chance to gauge where we are at this time and get an idea of what we need to work on over the next few months. Like most schools we are more concerned with being ready for the championship meets later in the season."

The Cardinals won both the men's and women's pole vault. Freshman Jenny D'Errico took the women's title with a height of 10-11 1/2, while junior Cory Wunderle captured the men's title with a height of 13-11 1/4. D'Errico's height is the fifth best in school history.

Juniors Allison Thomas and Devon Fitzgerald also won individual events. Thomas captured the 600-meter run (1:46.38), and Fitzgerald took the 60-meter hurdles (8.69).

"Most of those who didn't win showed that they are well ahead of where they were at the same time last year," Lehman said. "We'll take some time now to let them focus on finals, but we are very excited and anxious for the January meets."

The Cardinals are scheduled to return to competition Jan. 11, traveling back to Capital for a meet. Otterbein is scheduled to host its own meet Jan. 18.
