CINCINNATI, Ohio – Otterbein University got itself back into the win column Wednesday evening, walking away with a 12-6 road win at the College of Mount St. Joseph.
The Cardinals improve to 2-2 on the season with the victory, and will now travel south for a pair of spring break outings. Otterbein will play Ferrum College (Va.) on Tuesday, March 19 before closing with Greensboro College (N.C.) on the 21st. Both starting times are set for 3:30 p.m.
Otterbein, having split a pair of closing outings with MSJ (2-3) the last two seasons, got on the board early and often en route to a 7-0 halftime lead. Senior Andrew Donatelli scored three times in the first half.
The Cards upped the lead to 9-1 less than six minutes into the third period, but the Lions finished the quarter with three-straight scored to remain within striking distance.
Otterbein’s Hayden Novicki tallied a goal just 16 seconds into the final stanza and the Cards never looked back in earning the win.
Mount St. Joseph finished with a 33-28 shot advantage but Cardinal goalie Adam Hatchard came up with 13 saves in between the posts, including five in the fourth quarter. Junior Drew Watson helped the defensive unit with a game-high three forced turnovers.
Donatelli led all scorers with four goals while sophomore Michael Sullivan turned in a solid performance with two scores, two assists, two ground balls, and two caused turnovers.
Senior Juan Contreras tied for a game-high five ground balls while Donatelli and Novicki each secured four. Otterbein was also perfect 8 for 8 on clear attempts throughout the game.
