Women's Lax Gets Back in Win Column

Box Score

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Cardinal women’s lacrosse team, led by 16 saves from freshman goalie Karen Brady, got back into the win column Friday evening with a 6-3 road victory at Oberlin College.

Otterbein University, which lost 21-7 to Oberlin in its inaugural game last season, improves to 2-1 this season and will now have 11 days off before a pair of games on its spring break trip. Oberlin, meanwhile, falls to 1-1 on the season with the loss.

The Cardinals used a consistent and steady attack in the opening half, seeing Victoria Blatt and Annie Kelly account for all five scores en route to a 5-0 halftime advantage.

Oberlin got on the scoreboard to begin the second half, but Otterbein quickly answered with another goal from Blatt. The Yeowomen tallied a pair of goals down the stretch, but the Cards would be too strong in securing the win.

Oberlin held a 24-12 shot advantage, but Brady was outstanding in goal with her season-best 16 stops.

"Karen was just absolutely ridiculous out there," head coach Stephani Schmidt said afterwards. "Our defense really came together and gave Oberlin little room to operate. In my 12 years as a head coach, I had never had a team hold the opposition scoreless for an enitre half, until tonight."

The Cardinals were successful on 15 of 20 clear attempts and hauled in 6 of the 11 draw controls.

Otterbein opens its spring trip with a March 17 contest at Birmingham-South before finishing with Huntingdon.
