WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Otterbein University women’s lacrosse capped off its second season with a victory Saturday afternoon, defeating Concordia University (Wisc.) 12-8 at Clements Field.
The triumph concludes Otterbein’s season at 8-7, a solid improvement from the team’s 5-11 inaugural year in 2012.
The Cardinals flew out of the gate, opening the game on a 4-0 run before the Falcons stormed back with five unanswered goals.
Otterbein freshman Annie Kelly converted a man-up goal with 32 seconds remaining in the first half, and teammate Alyssa Johnson tallied another score less than one minute into the second for a 6-5 lead.
Concordia tied the game back momentarily, but Otterbein scored three-straight goals spanning the next 12 minutes to open a 9-6 advantage.
The Falcons trailed by just two with 9:45 to play, but the margin would ultimately be enough for Otterbein.
Johnson led all scorers with three goals and two helpers on the day, while Kelly and Tori Blatt each registered two points in the winning effort.
Sam Meuwissen finished with four points to lead Concordia, which was outshot 32-17 by Otterbein.
The Cardinals won 15 of the 22 draw controls and limited the Falcons to a 10 of 19 output on clear attempts.
Otterbein recognized its lone senior, defender Chelsea McKeehan, prior to starting time for her contributions to the program. McKeehan came up to play on the attack end in the final minutes of regulation and scored her first goal of the season.
