WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Otterbein University men's soccer was dealt its first defeat of the season Tuesday with a 2-0 loss to visiting Ohio Wesleyan University.
The Cardinals, falling to 3-1 on the season, return to action this weekend with two more matches against the North Coast Athletic Conference. Otterbein travels to Denison University Saturday afternoon and Kenyon College Sunday.
Ohio Wesleyan, ranked No. 6 in the latest national poll, used a pair of first-half goals and never looked back in improving to 5-0 this season. The Bishops got on the board at the 16:32 mark when Jon Stegner fed a baseline pass to the middle of the box and watched teammate Taylor Rieger blast it home.
OWU extended the lead to 2-0 in the 36th minute after Alex Stanton hit a bouncing shot from 30 yards out that skipped over the hands of Cardinal goalkeeper Kyle Ripma.
The Cardinals had a pair of great opportunities to get on the scoreboard in the second half, the first coming on a free kick from Conor Holland that hit the cross bar and deflected out of bounds.
Otterbein nearly cut the deficit in half again with 16 minutes to play when Holland roped a shot that ricocheted off a Bishop defender, which then hit the left post and trickled across the goal line to also hit the right post.
OWU finished with a 23-9 advantage on shots and a 10-4 edge in the corner-kick department. Colin Beemiller had four saves for the visitors while Otterbein keeper Kyle Ripma made seven.
