Stemen, Shivley Help Otterbein Take Down Hiram

Box Score

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Cardinal women's soccer team picked up a second-straight home win Wednesday evening, turning back Hiram College by a score of 2-0 at Memorial Stadium.

Otterbein, improving to 4-2-3 on the season with the victory, will now turn its attention to Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play starting on Saturday evening, hosting Heidelberg University at 7 p.m.

Melinda Stemen turns upfield.
The Cardinals scored in the opening minutes against Hiram, getting a surprising goal from senior Melinda Stemen just four minutes in. Stemen lofted a ball into the box from 35 yards out near the right sideline, watching it continue to sail and find its way over the out-stretched arms of Hiram keeper Kailie Reed.

Otterbein nearly scored right as the second half began when junior Megan McCabe hit the crossbar, but made sure to put one away less than a minute later when McCabe sent in a ball from the right sideline and to the feet of sophomore Alvi Shivley, who ripped a strong one-timer home for her second goal of the fall.

The advantage would be all that as needed for a stingy Cardinal defense, which limited the Terrier attack all evening and relinquished just a few scoring chances.

Otterbein happily welcomed back sophomore forward Madison Burchfield late in the first half, getting the returning second team All-OAC performer her first action of the season after she endured a preseason injury in August.

The Cardinals finished with an 11-6 shot advantage over Hiram and won all nine corner kicks in the match. Following Saturday's date with Heidelberg, the Cardinals will head to John Carroll University on Tuesday, Oct. 7 for another night contest.
