UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Otterbein University men's basketball team suffered a 72-55 loss at John Carroll University Wednesday evening in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action.
Despite the loss, the Cardinals remain in control for the eighth and final spot in next week's league tournament. Otterbein will either need a win Saturday evening over Heidleberg or a Muskingum loss to qualify for the postseason.
Cardinal seniors Jason Davis and Jon Juergens will be recognized prior to the 7:30 p.m. tip-off against Heidelberg for their contributions to the program.
John Carroll (15-9, 9-8 OAC) opened the game on a 15-4 run spanning the first 10 minutes of action before taking a 34-19 lead into halftime.
Otterbein (4-20, 3-14 OAC) cut the lead down to 10 by the 14:14 mark of the second half after a Matt Rhodes layup, but the host Blue Streaks regrouped and eventually played to victory.
Jake Phillis and Matt Rhodes each scored 11 points to lead the Cardinals while Jake Bischoff added nine. Marc McCuen was solid off the bench, chipping in eight points and a team-high seven rebounds.
John Carroll was paced by David Linane and Doug Caputo, who also scored 11 points apiece to lead a balanced Blue Streak attack.
The Cardinals managed to shoot just 30 percent for the game while John Carroll fire a 46.8 percentage from the field. The Blue Streaks also finished with a 50-37 rebounding advantage.
