ADA, Ohio – The Cardinal men's basketball team was dealt a setback at Ohio Northern University Thursday evening, falling 88-74 to the Polar Bears in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action.
The first period saw early ties at 9, 12, and 14 before the host Polar Bears (11-9, 7-6 OAC) used a quick 6-0 spurt to open a 20-14 advantage.
Otterbein (4-16, 3-10 OAC) stayed within a possession as the first-half clock moved under 7:00, but ONU managed to out-score the Cardinals 18-9 over the remainder of the first half en route to a 43-31 halftime lead.
The Polar Bears remained in control to begin the second half, pushing the lead to 66-42 by the 12:08 mark and never looking back.
Freshman guard Jake Phillis dropped 19 points for the Cardinals, shooting 7-of-15 to lead all scorers in the contest. Jake Bischoff marked the other Otterbein performer in double figures, finishing with 11.
Domonique Royal paced the ONU attack with 16 points while Lucas Pennington and Branden Rushton each had 12.
Ohio Northern shot 52 percent compared to Otterbein's 42 percent, and the Polar Bears forced the Cardinals into committing seven more turnovers.
Otterbein went a solid 17 of 24 at the free-throw line but connected on just 7-of-26 attempts from behind the arc.
Otterbein finishes out the week at home in the Rike Center, hosting league-leading University of Mount Union at 7:30 p.m.
The Cardinal volleyball team will be recognized at halftime of the event after making a fourth-straight NCAA Championships appearance this past season that included the program's first win in the tournament.
