WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein University women's lacrosse team fell to 1-2 on the young season Saturday afternoon, dropping a 10-3 contest with visiting Oberlin College at local Westerville Central High School.
Oberlin (1-0) got off to a quick start, scoring two goals in the first seven minutes of action for an early advantage.
Otterbein's Tory Blatt got her team on the board with a goal at the 18:36 mark, taking a pass from sophomore Morgan Hunsaker and easily beating the goalie.
The Yeowomen answered with a score less than two minutes later, and extended the lead to 4-1 by halftime after out-shooting the Cardinals 13-7 over the initial 30 minutes.
The Cardinals began the scoring in the second half, watching sophomore Annie Kelly find junior Rebecca Carter for a goal less than two minutes in. Oberlin would regain control from there however, posting three-straight goals by the midway point of the period to open a 7-2 cushion.
Otterbein freshman Maria Blaszczyk put an end to the Yeowomen spurt with an unassisted goal at the 13:19 mark, but it would be all Oberlin from there on out.
The visitors finished with a 29-14 shot advantage for the contest, forcing Otterbein into committing 27 turnovers and ultimately posting a 33-21 edge in ground balls.
Both goalies were solid in the cage during the lower-scoring matchup. Otterbein sophomore Karen Brady did all she could to keep her team within striking distance throughout, finishing with an impressive 14 saves. Alexa L'Insalata came up with nine important stops of her own for the Oberlin defensive side.
The three goals for Otterbein mark the fewest since a May 1, 2012 contest at Washington and Jefferson.
Oberlin's Grace Barlow led all scorers with four goals and two assists while Cardinal senior Kayle Quinter snagged a game-high six ground balls.
Otterbein returns to action Thursday afternoon, hosting Franciscan University at 4:30 p.m.
