Cardinals Draw Ohio Wesleyan in Clements Field Finale

Box Score
WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Cardinal women's soccer team found some late magic Wednesday evening to force overtime with Ohio Wesleyan University, getting an 88th minute goal from freshman Alyssa Spencer en route to a 1-1 draw.

Otterbein University, playing its final home game at Clements Field before moving to the turf field in newly-renovated Memorial Stadium, dominated the Bishops from intermission on before ultimately walking away with the tie.

Otterbein, moving to 1-2-3 on the season with the result, saw a prime opportunity to score in the 19th minute when senior Melinda Stemen maneuvered around a handful of Wesleyan defenders and down near the baseline, feeding a pass to an incoming Polly Sellers. Unfortunately, Sellers ensuing shot was saved by OWU keeper Kenzie Howell and the match remained scoreless.

The Bishops (1-4-1) took the lead in the 29th minute of action, getting a free kick goal from 25 yards out of the foot of Alyssa Giarusso.

Otterbein continued to find chances, nearly scoring when a shot from Abbey Miltko slid just left of the post and again when an Erica Meier attempt deflected off the crossbar. Sophomore Natalie Ashbrook had a chance during a scrum off a corner kick, but Howell came up with another save and the Bishops took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Cardinals dominated the second half, maintaining possession on their offensive side of the field for nearly the entire 45 minutes and out-shooting the Bishops 13-0 in the span.

Otterbein leading-scorer Jillian Strimbu came up empty on a handful of set-piece chances throughout the frame, and the Cards appeared to be running out of opportunities until winning their 11th corner kick of the period in the 88th minute. Senior Alex Ancona lofted the attempt into the box and Spencer found some space in traffic, right in front of the net, to convert a header for the equalizing score and the first goal of her young career.

The Tan and Cardinal out-shot OWU 7-1 over the two overtime sessions, but none of them would be the game-winner as the group was forced to settle for a draw.

Otterbein finished with a commanding 25-4 shot advantage, including a 20-1 margin after halftime. The Cardinals took 19 corner kicks compared to just one for the visitors, coming early in overtime.

Otterbein will return to action Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m. matchup at Manchester University in Indiana. The team will host three-consecutive home matches following that trip, beginning with Kenyon College on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.
