HANOVER, Ind. – The Otterbein University volleyball team was dealt a slight setback on the young season over the weekend, dropping three of four matches while competing at the Hanover College Invitational.

Otterbein (4-4) opened the event strong, recovering from a close 25-23 opening-set loss to Centre College (Ky.) to win the following three games 25-20, 25-19, 25-20.

Senior Kim Barker hit .421 in the winning effort, blasting 11 kills on 19 attempts while committing just three errors. Classmate Kendel Kellogg recorded a match-best 13 kills while sophomore Rachel Dosch was also effective, registering seven kills, and no mishaps, on 14 total attempts.

Senior setter Kayla Radekin handed out 30 assists while libero Evelyn Carus and back-line mate Gracie Staten combined for 45 digs. Staten was seeing her first action of the season after missing the team's opening tournament due to illness.

Otterbein fell in the nightcap to the host Panthers, falling in three competitive sets by scores of 23-25, 24-26 and 19-25. The Cardinals managed to hit just .128 as a group in the match and compared to Hanover's .247 output. Carus had 20 defensive digs for Otterbein, which committed 15 errors at the service line.

Otterbein dropped its opening contest Saturday morning in a rematch against 23rd-ranked DePauw University, who the Cardinals took down in the first round of last year's NCAA Tournament. The Tigers got some revenge this time around, posting victory by scores of 25-21, 25-18, 25-17.

The Cardinals hit -.042 against the Tigers, getting a team-high six kills from freshman Marie Thornton throughout. DePauw (5-1) only hit .102 themselves but found a way to emerge.

Otterbein finished out its stay with a three-set loss to Spalding University (Ky.), falling 20-25, 19-25, 17-25. Barker had eight kills and hit .636 in the matchup while Maddy Shelley contributed seven kills herself.

Otterbein will play an exhibition match at Columbus State Community College on Tuesday evening before traveling to the Wittenberg Invitational the ensuing weekend. The Cards will face off against top-ranked Calvin, fourth-ranked Cal Lutheran and No. 12 Washington-St. Louis.
