The Cardinals, who boost their record to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play, shut out the Muskies for the 13th time dating back to 2003. The win was also the largest victory for the Cards in that span over Muskingum, topping a 6-0 win in 2010.
Senior
Megan McCabe recorded three goals on the night, scoring one goal in the first half and a pair in the second. McCabe now sits with six goals on the year.
Jillian Strimbu got the scoring going for the Cardinals in the fifth minute, posting her third goal in the last four games on a pass to the middle of the Muskie box from
Polly Sellers, that was finished strong past opposing goalkeeper Heather Maxwell.
Less than four minutes later,
Madison Burchfield scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season by heading in a corner kick from
Alex Ancona, who then picked up an assist on McCabe's initial score in the 23rd minute. That scoring play would increase the Cardinal lead to 3-0 at the half.
Otterbein led Muskingum 21-0 in shots at the break while also leading 11-0 in corner kicks.
Burchfield flipped the script just over three minutes into the second period, assisting McCabe on her second goal of the evening on a touch pass into the box that was promptly tapped past Maxwell in the Muskie goal.
Erica Meier extended the Cardinal advantage to 5-0 in the 52nd minute, scoring her third goal of the season on a well-placed through-ball by Strimbu. McCabe's third goal came in the 58th minute following a corner kick that ended up loose in the Muskingum box, to which McCabe rebounded and placed into the back of the net.
Morgan Hall and
Morgan Feeney also got in on the scoring action, each tallying their first goal of the season over the final 22 minutes of action. Hall's goal was the first of her collegiate career.
Otterbein ended the game with a commanding 39-4 advantage in shots, including a 19-3 lead in shots on goal. The Cards also won the corner kick margin at 18-0.
Cardinal goalkeeper
Dana Strimbu picked up her seventh win in goal and fourth shutout of the year.
Andrea Pohlman also saw time between the posts for Otterbein, stopping three shots in 45 minutes off the bench.
Next up for the Cardinals is a trip to Wilmington on Oct. 21 for an OAC matchup beginning at 7 p.m.
