Box Score DELAWARE, Ohio – The Otterbein women's soccer team picked up its first win of the fall Tuesday night on the road, getting a second-half from junior
Polly Sellers to earn a 1-0 victory at nearby Ohio Wesleyan University.
The Cardinals, now 1-3 on the young season, will return home and finish out the week with a Saturday afternoon contest against Manchester University at Memorial Stadium. Ohio Wesleyan, meanwhile, falls to 0-4-1 overall.
Otterbein saw a couple of early chances, the best being an
Abbey Miltko shot off a corner kick, in the 25th minute, that unfortunately sailed over the crossbar. The Cardinals continued to control the majority of first-half possession, getting a handful of corner-kick opportunities as the period closed but coming up empty each time.
Sellers found some space in the attacking zone for the Cards to begin the second half, but a shot from the top of the box deflected off the crossbar to keep the game in a stalemate.
Otterbein saw another good chance in the 63rd minute when
Erica Meier lofted an up-close shot over the crossbar, but finally found the back of the net in the 72nd on a sequence started by
Madison Burchfield, who beat two defenders and directed a pass into the box. Sellers was there to quickly gather, turn and rip a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced down into the goal.
The Cardinals continued to stay on the attack for the remainder of the game, applying pressure on Ohio Wesleyan goalie Mackenzie Brunke before walking away with the 1-0 victory.
Otterbein dominated possession, finishing with a one-sided 23-2 shot advantage and taking all but one of the 13 corner kicks throughout the match. The Cardinal defense played at full strength for the first time this season with the return of fifth-year senior
Alex Ancona, who missed the initial three games due to a slight injury.
Brunke was forced to make eight saves for the host squad while Otterbein keeper
Dana Strimbu enjoyed a relatively light outing, not needing to make any.
