Box Score WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein women's soccer team earned its third win of the season Sunday afternoon, taking down Mount St. Joseph by a score of 2-1 at Memorial Stadium.
The Cardinals, now winners in three of their last four outings, have outscored opponents 12-1 in the those three victories.
Madison Burchfield got the Cards on the board first in the 15th minute, scoring her second goal of the season off a header on a corner kick by
Ali Stone. Stone notched her second assist of the season on the play.
The Lions evened the score 30 seconds later off a shot by Kaylan Gruber in the Cardinal box, slipping the ball past Otterbein goalkeeper
Dana Strimbu.
Otterbein quickly reclaimed the lead in the 24th minute on
Hayley Hotchkiss's third goal of the season, scoring off a lead pass by
Erica Meier into the Lions box. Meier tallied her third assist of the year on the score.
Mount St. Joseph outshot Otterbein 7-5 in the first half, while the Cards had a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal and 7-3 margin in corner kicks.
Neither team managed to score in the second half of action, as the Cardinal defense was stellar in keeping the opposition at bay.
Otterbein's defensive front played a large role in helping prevent Mount St. Joseph from tying the game, limiting the Lions to getting just eight of their 15 shots on goal.
Strimbu had a busy afternoon in goal for the Cards, saving six shots in the second half and seven total for the game in her third victory. The Lions goalkeeping duo of Michelle Hessling and Lindsey Sturwold combined for six saves in the loss.
Despite being outshot 15-9, Otterbein had eight of its nine shots land on goal while also posting an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.
The Cardinals will play their final non-conference game of the season on Sept. 30 at Hiram. First kick is set for 7:30 p.m. in Hiram, Ohio.
