Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Ohio –
Luis Rivas scored twice as the Otterbein University men's soccer team draws 2-2 at Wittenberg on Sunday.
After falling behind 1-0 to the Tigers off a Patrick Szymczak goal in the eighth minute, Rivas evened the score three minutes later off a strike in the box into the back of the net.
The Tigers then regained their one goal advantage in the 24th minute, scoring off an assist from Nick Gutlove to Zack Moore.
Both teams traded shots over the remainder of the opening frame, before Wittenberg took its 2-1 lead and 7-2 shot advantage into halftime.
Neither team managed to score until 33 minutes into the second half, as Rivas again found the back of the net off a header coming from a corner kick by
Reid Wolfe. The assist was Wolfe's second of the season.
A total of four combined shots were taken over the remaining 12 minutes of regulation, before the game was forced into overtime.
20 extra minutes were played over two overtime periods, but neither team was able to score a decisive goal, forcing a 2-2 draw. The tie was the first for Otterbein on the year, as opposed to Wittenberg's second in as many games.
Despite being outshout 19-8, the Cardinals held a distinct advantage in saves at 11-2 behind stellar work in goal from
Lukas Swysgood. The draw was Otterbein's first non-losing decision of the season.
The Cardinals will return to action on Sept. 9 against nationally-ranked Ohio Wesleyan at Memorial Stadium. First kick is slated for 4 p.m.
