WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein women's soccer team was defeated, 3-2, by Baldwin Wallace on Tuesday night in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament quarterfinal matchup at Memorial Stadium.
The Cardinals wrap up their 2016 campaign with a 10-6-2 overall record, while the Yellow Jackets advance to the semifinals of the OAC Tournament with a 12-8-1 mark.
The first half featured stellar goalkeeping by senior
Andrea Pohlman, who saved five shots in the frame to keep the Yellow Jacket offense at bay. BW's Courtney Schutz fired one of the best shots of the half in the 37th minute on a shot to the top right corner of the Cardinal goal, but Pohlman made a spectacular save to keep the game scoreless.
BW managed to trump Otterbein in the shot margin, 9-7, but neither team found the back of the net through the first 45 minutes of action. Yellow Jacket goalkeeper Sophia Weidner totaled four saves in the opening period.
The second half was a fury of scoring as five goals were tallied between the two squads, including the initial score of the game by the Yellow Jackets' Marissa Fabrizi in the 48th minute. BW extended its lead to 2-0 shortly into the 69th minute, as Kenna Poptic netted her first career goal.
Otterbein did not let up though as senior
Madison Burchfield initiated a rally for the Cards with just over seven minutes remaining, finding the back of the net for her team-leading ninth goal off a loose ball that was promptly shot over Weidner in the BW goal.
BW's Rachel Bender, the league leader in points, swung the momentum back in the Yellow Jackets' favor six minutes later with her 19th goal of the season off a lead pass from Anna Poptic into the Cardinal box.
Senior
Erica Meier tacked on her sixth goal of the season for the Cards with less than a minute left to play, but the comeback proved to be too late. Otterbein ended the match with an 18-16 shot advantage, including a 12-10 lead in shots on goal.
Pohlman finished with six saves on the night in just her second time all season allowing more than two goals, while Weidner posted 10 saves with six in the second half.
The game also marked the final contest in the collegiate career of the 13 seniors on the Cardinal squad, as they totaled a 44-23-8 overall record throughout the last four years.
