Cards Drop 88-64 Contest at Baldwin Wallace

BEREA, Ohio – The Otterbein University men's basketball team fell, 88-64, to Baldwin Wallace on Saturday inside Ursprung Gymnasium.

Otterbein (4-17 overall) moves to 2-12 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play with three of its final four games of the season coming at home, beginning with Wilmington next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Sophomore forward Matt Hughes led the opening half charge for the Cardinals, shooting a perfect 6-of-6 from the field with a first-half high 14 points. After jumping out to a 7-2 lead, Otterbein maintained its advantage for nearly seven minutes of play.

BW regained the lead at 18-17 with 10:22 remaining, increasing its lead to as many as seven points in the opening half. Junior guard Jake Phillis chipped in nine first-half points to help Otterbein outshoot its opposition with a 48.3 percent mark from the field.

Hughes converted the first two baskets of the second half to put the Cards back on top, 40-39, giving Otterbein its first lead since the 9:38 mark of the first half. Otterbein's final lead of the game was at the 13:11 mark, as a three-pointer by senior forward Marc McCuen gave the Cards a 51-50 advantage.

The Yellow Jackets then manufactured 10-0 scoring run to take a 62-51 lead with 9:04 left to play. Otterbein narrowed its deficit to six points on a shot from behind the arc by Phillis with under seven minutes remaining, before BW ended the game on a 24-6 scoring run. 

Hughes led the Cards in scoring for the third time in the last four games, totaling 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting and grabbing seven rebounds. Phillis followed with 18 points on a 7-of-21 performance from the field, corralling four rebounds. Phillis is now just eight points shy of reaching the 1,000-point plateau for his career.

McCuen chipped in 11 points for an Otterbein team that shot 42.4 percent from the field. BW finished the game shooting an even 50 percent from the field, including a 13-of-26 mark from three-point range.
