Ohio Wesleyan Edges Otterbein in Final Seconds

Box Score
WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein women's lacrosse team was dealt a disappointing home loss Thursday afternoon at Memorial Stadium, narrowly falling by a score of 10-9 to Ohio Wesleyan University.

The Bishops overcame a 5-3 halftime deficit, eventually scoring the game-winning goal off the stick of Meghan Doherty with five seconds remaining to escape victorious. OWU improved to 4-2 on the year.

The Cardinals looked very sharp early on as sophomore Ali Kula assisted a pair of man-up goals to Alanna Schultz and Katy Williams in the opening minutes. Ohio Wesleyan got on the scoreboard at the 21:55 mark, but Otterbein responded with three-straight goals (two from Annie Kelly) to open a 5-1 lead with 8:22 before halftime.

OWU came out firing to begin the second half, scoring three-straight times to take a 6-5 lead before Otterbein tied things at 6-6 on a goal from Williams shortly after. The Cards then seized a bit of momentum with a two-straight goals from sophomore Nicole Coccagno, who was seeing her first action of the spring.

Wesleyan quickly tied the game at 8-8 midway through the second half and then both sides traded scores to remain locked down the stretch. Otterbein took possession after a missed shot from the Bishops with 30 seconds left, but was unable to clear the ball as the visitors forced a turnover and then netted the difference-maker.

Kelly and Williams both scored three times for Otterbein on the day while Kula and Coccagno tallied two points each. The Cards dominated the draw control, winning 15 of 21 chances, and also won the ground ball battle at 33-23.

Taylor Weis paced the Bishops with a game-best four goals while Doherty had three. Sofia Corrao controlled much of the attack for OWU with a game-high six points, scoring twice and setting up four others. Both teams took 20 shots throughout.

Kelly Coffyn made six saves for Ohio Wesleyan, five in the first half, and Otterbein goalie Karen Brady finished with four in the opposite cage.

Otterbein will have a quick turnaround to finish the week, hosting Calvin College Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Start time is scheduled for noon.
