BEREA, Ohio – The Otterbein women's lacrosse team took its first Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) loss of the spring season Saturday afternoon, making a late push but ultimately falling 15-12 at Baldwin Wallace University.
The Yellow Jackets (9-4, 2-1 OAC) held a 2-1 lead at the 27:40 mark before using three-unanswered goals to extend that margin to 5-1 with 18:39 remaining in the period.
Otterbein (4-7, 2-1 OAC) stayed within striking distance, getting three first-half goals from junior
Katy Williams and closing with scores from
Ali Kula and
Abby Smoot to trail 10-6 by intermission.
BW widened the gap to 13-6 with three very early goals after halftime, and later held a relatively comfortable lead of 15-8 with 9:33 left on the clock. Otterbein never stopped fighting, scoring four-straight times in the closing 6:19 to cut the final margin to just 15-12.
Seven different Cardinals scored at least once in the contest, with Williams' hat trick leading the way and
Annie Kelly,
Nicole Coccagno and
Alanna Schultz all adding two goals each. Kelly affected the game across the field again with game-highs of seven ground balls and seven caused turnovers.
The Cardinals won 18 of 29 draw controls, led by a game-best seven from
Veronica Wagner, and won 4 of 9 free-position shots. Baldwin Wallace went just 1 of 5 on free-position opportunities but got nine saves from goalie Taylor Giordanego on the opposite end.
Kayla Miller paced the Baldwin Wallace offense with a game-high four goals.
Karen Brady stop seven shots in the Otterbein cage and BW finished with a slim 28-27 edge in total shots.Â
