WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein University volleyball team dropped a non-conference match Tuesday evening on the road, falling in three sets at NAIA Mount Vernon Nazarene.
The Cardinals, losing by scores of 21-25, 14-25, 20-25, now sit with a 5-4 record on the season and will be back in action this coming weekend at the Kenyon College Invitational. Otterbein opens against Albion College (Mich.) Friday at 5 p.m.
Otterbein led nearly the entire first set, eventually standing on top at 19-15 before the host Cougars ignited a rally. Mount Vernon (14-1) closed the frame on a 10-2 run, tying things at 21-21 before rattling off the final four points.
The Cougars would carry that momentum into the second set, opening a 13-7 lead and never looking back en route to an easy win.
MVNU then held off Otterbein in a back-and-forth third set, which saw ties at 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 13, 16 and 17 before the hosts kicked into gear late.
Mount Vernon hit an impressive .312 as a team for the match, getting 14 kills from Annelise Rohrer and a combined 37 assists from setters Bridget Troyer and Emily Rahe. It was the fourth-straight win for the Cougars.
Otterbein was led offensively by
Megan Volosin's nine kills and .208 hitting percentage while teammates
Olivia Harris,
Alana King-Mendenhall and
Marie Thornton each tallied five. Setter
Andrea Miller finished with 25 helpers at the net while Harris and libero
Ashlyn Leon each had double-digit digs.
