Second-Half Surge Lifts Cards Past Wilmington

Box Score

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein women's soccer team picked up a 2-0 victory over Wilmington on Tuesday night to improve to 2-2 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play.

The Cardinals, now 9-2-1 overall, turn their attention to hosting Heidelberg on Saturday afternoon in one of their final five matches of the regular season. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.

The action was limited in the first half of play as Otterbein outshot Wilmington 11-2, with three of the Cards' shots coming on goal along with a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Perhaps the best two looks of the frame came midway through the 16th minute as sophomore Katie Exline attempted a header that was blocked by a Quaker defender, before senior Alyssa Spencer launched the next touch off the crossbar.

Wilmington goalkeeper Ana Hosler helped keep the Cards at-bay stopping a trio of shots, while Otterbein's Katie Both saved one shot in just as effective of play on the opposite end.

Otterbein opened the scoring valve less than four minutes into the second half as sophomore Haleigh Guerra netted the first goal of her Cardinal career, finishing a touch pass toward the goal from classmate Haley Hott.

Spencer redeemed herself from the near goal in the first half, blasting a shot 10 minutes later from about 15 yards out which initially appeared to be saved by Hosler in goal before the ball slipped under her reach and across the goal line.

The Cardinals threatened to score a few more times over the remaining 32 minutes of action, but to no avail as they notched their fifth shutout of the season and second-straight victory holding their opponent to one goal or fewer.

Exline led the Cards with six shots with Spencer following at two of her own, while freshman Erin Gordon, who relieved Both after she posted a scoreless first half in goal, was credited with the win in goal after saving three shots in a scoreless half of her own with a two-goal advantage for the Cards.
