WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein women's soccer team recorded a pivotal 4-0 win over Marietta on Tuesday night amidst cold and damp conditions at Memorial Stadium.
The Cardinals (11-4-1 overall) improve to 4-4 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play with just one game remaining on their regular-season schedule against Mount Union for Senior Day on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
Otterbein currently sits in sole possession of sixth-place in the conference standings with the six-team OAC Tournament on the horizon next week. A win Saturday against Mount Union and a loss by Baldwin Wallace could propel the Cards as high as the four-seed in the tournament.
Otterbein got off to a fast start netting a trio of first-half goals, with the first coming in the 19th minute off the foot of freshman
Priscilla Severance who tapped a shot past Marietta goalkeeper Karlee Bruns following a ball sent in from 35 yards out by sophomore
Haleigh Guerra.
The Cards added to their advantage in the 33rd minute as sophomore
Annie Mosca put the team ahead 2-0 on her second goal in three games, heading the ball past a host of Pioneer defenders in the box off a corner kick from Guerra.
Marietta helped boost the Otterbein lead to 3-0 less than three minutes before halftime, misplaying a ball near the goal before it slipped in for the score. The Cards went into the break holding a 10-3 margin in shots.
The second half of action featured a goal change on both sides to begin the frame, with the Cards' starter
Erin Gordon exiting in favor of
Katie Both after stopping a pair of shots. Bruns conversely stepped off the field for the Pioneers with four saves giving way to Rebecca Tenney.
Otterbein nearly added another score less than 15 minutes into the second period as a flurry of nifty moves near the Marietta box by sophomore
Haley Hott led to a pass in front of the goal line to senior
Alyssa Spencer who attempted a shot that was saved right to Tenney.
Guerra finished off the Cardinal scoring attack with her second goal of the season in the 71st minute, slipping a shot into the back of the net off the extra pass from fellow sophomore
Katie Exline.
The Cards ended the game with a stellar 26-4 advantage in shots with 15 of them coming on goal, while Otterbein also secured the margin in corner kicks at 8-0.
