WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein women's soccer squad posted a come from behind 2-1 win against Mount Union Saturday afternoon in its regular-season finale on Senior Day at Memorial Stadium.
The Cardinals (12-4-1 overall) clinched the four-seed in next week's OAC Tournament after improving to 5-4 in league play along with a loss for Baldwin Wallace at second-place Capital. As a result Mount Union finishes with the sixth-seed, while Otterbein will host fifth-seeded BW in a quarterfinal match Monday night with game time set for 7 p.m.
Mount Union jumped out to a quick 1-0 advantage over Otterbein less than two minutes in as Maggie O'Donnell found the back of the net for her seventh goal of the year off an assist which was touched to her by Katie Goedecke inside the box.
The Purple Raiders' aggressive play stymied the Cardinal offense for a good chunk of the initial frame, before Otterbein earned a free kick in the 32nd minute on a foul called just outside the Mount Union box.
Senior
Alyssa Spencer stepped up for the shot from about 15 yards out, slicing the ball past a host of Mount Union defenders inside the far post. The goal was Spencer's third of the year and one of a game-high six shots.
The score remained knotted at one goal apiece heading into the halftime break, with the Cardinals holding an 11-8 lead in shots. A total of 19 fouls were also handed out in the period.
Nearly 25 minutes passed in the second half before freshman
Myiah Kelley broke through the Purple Raider defense for her third score of the season, gathering a lengthy lead pass from midfield off the foot of classmate
Priscilla Severance.
Otterbein maintained its 2-1 advantage for the final 20 minutes of action, limiting to Mount Union to just three second-half shots. The Cards concluded the match owning a 25-11 margin in shots, notching 11 of them on goal.
Cardinal goalkeeper
Erin Gordon, who made a string of stellar saves in both halves to keep the Raider attack at-bay, stopped six shots for her eighth win of the year.
