Women's Hoops Storms Past Ohio Wesleyan

Box Score

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Otterbein women's basketball team improved to 2-1 on the season following a 68-49 victory over Ohio Wesleyan on the road Tuesday night.

The Cardinals, which defeated the Battling Bishops 64-54 just four days ago on day two at the Manchester Classic, have now defeated OWU four times in the last three seasons and in each of their last five meetings.

Otterbein got off to a quick start with a 23-14 advantage after one quarter, as an early tie at five points apiece turned into an 18-9 scoring run to end the frame.

The Cards then tallied their second-straight 20-point quarter while holding the Bishops to one point less than their first-period total, thanks in part to five-consecutive points off the bench from freshman Bryn Mangold in less than two minutes.

Six different players scored in the quarter for the Cardinals as they headed into halftime with a 43-27 advantage, shooting just under 40 percent. Senior Kiersten Taylor paced the game in scoring at the break with 12 points, as Otterbein made the most of its trips to the foul line going 8 for 10.

Otterbein resumed its scoring prowess right from the start of the second half en route to gaining its largest lead of the night at 57-34 with 1:19 left in the third quarter. The Cards held the same margin over the Bishops twice in the final period, before settling on their second-straight double-digit win.

Junior Dani Kissel, who checked in with just five points at halftime, finished with a team-high 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting to go along with four rebounds. Taylor was held scoreless in the second half but tied with sophomore Abbie Scholz, who posted 10 points, for a team-best eight boards.

Mangold and junior Ali Cartnal rounded out the scoring effort for the Cardinals, combining for 18 points and nine rebounds. Otterbein concluded the contest going 17 of 20 from the charity stripe, forcing 26 turnovers on its opposition to accompany a 45-rebound performance.

Next up for the Cards is competition at the Pat Deacon Classic hosted by Transylvania University this weekend in Lexington, Ky. Otterbein will face Transylvania in its first game of the event Saturday evening at 6 p.m.
