UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Cardinal men's basketball team suffered a 97-58 defeat at John Carroll on Wednesday night in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) mathcup inside the DeCarlo Center.
Otterbein (7-13 overall) falls to 3-10 in league play and surrenders the season series to the Blue Streaks, which came into the night having won nine of its last 10 games.
The Cardinals got off to a rocky start down 9-0 through the first 2:40 of play after missing their first three shots.
Guard
Corey Howard was first to ink the scoreboard for Otterbein on a made three-pointer at the 17:22 mark before assisting forward
Cameron Arminio four minutes later to cut the Cards' deficit to two possessions.
Otterbein came within four points of John Carroll at the 10:29 mark before the Blue Streaks put together a 17-6 run to take a 39-24 lead with less than five minutes left in the half.
JCU totaled 16 points over the remainder of the frame, holding Otterbein to just three points, as the Blue Streaks entered the break shooting 58 percent on 22-of-38 from the field.
The Blue Streaks opened the second half by quickly extending its lead to 26 points over the first five minutes, posting seven made field-goals and a pair of free throws.
JCU recorded its largest lead of the game at the 2:19 mark on a made layup from beyond the arc by Connor Fitzgerald inflated the Streaks' lead to 97-55.
Otterbein finished the game shooting 33.8 percent on 22-of-65 from the floor, converting just 11 field goals in both halves. JCU did not slow down its tempo, closing out the game with a 54.9 percent mark from the field.
Forward
Bryan Mackenzie led the Cardinals with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting, while Arminio finished with 12 points on a 4-of-8 mark from three-point range.
