Box Score DELAWARE, Ohio – The Otterbein women's lacrosse team picked up a notable road win Thursday evening, catching fire late to pull away and defeat host Ohio Wesleyan by a score of 13-8.
The Cardinals, improving to 3-4 on the season, avenge last season's narrow loss to OWU in which the Bishops scored the game-winner with five seconds remaining.
Otterbein wasted no time jumping ahead this time around, opening a 3-0 lead after the first nine minutes behind a goal from
Veronica Wagner and then two from leading-scorer
Katy Williams.
Ohio Wesleyan (2-4) settled in and eventually drew even at 4-4 in a first half full of scoring runs. The Cardinals responded with three-straight goals, a pair from Williams sandwiched around one from Wagner, before the Bishops ended the half on a rally to force a 7-7 tie at intermission.
The hosts took an 8-7 lead at the 23:43 mark of the second half, but it would be all Otterbein from there as the Cardinals rallied together and finished the contest on a 6-0 run. The stretch began with sophomore
Abby Smoot finding the back of the net twice and then the Cards broke down the OWU defense with four unassisted goals in the final 11 minutes of action.
Five players registered multi-goal efforts, led by Williams' third game in a row with four and then a hat trick from Wagner, who also snagged eight draw controls.
Jamie Kuder,
Ema Pusecker and Smoot all posted two scores for an offense than held a 31-19 shot advantage.
Otterbein's defense remained stingy throughout the entire second half, allowing just the one goal and ultimately getting game-highs of seven groundballs and two caused turnovers from freshman
Cristiana Nicholas. Â
Tasha Williams made five stops in the cage to earn the win at goalie and help the Cardinals start transition, which resulted in 13 of 17 successful clears.
Otterbein will finish out the week on the road, traveling to Heidelberg University one Saturday night to launch its Ohio Athletic Conference schedule.
