UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Cardinal women's lacrosse team suffered a 22-10 loss at John Carroll in its season finale Saturday night at Don Shula Stadium.
Otterbein concludes its 2017 campaign with a 7-8 overall record and even 4-4 mark in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play, missing out on the fourth and final spot in next week's conference tournament.
John Carroll conversely improves to 11-4 overall and 6-2 in OAC action, securing the four-seed in the postseason bracket with a matchup at top-seeded Mount Union on tap next Wednesday.
Senior
Katy Williams notched the initial goal of the game less than five minutes in, firing a shot past JCU goalkeeper Elyssa Zablo. The Blue Streaks responded with five-straight scores of their own, before consecutive scores by freshman
Jamie Kuder and sophomore
Abby Smoot stalled JCU's momentum and narrowed the score to 5-3.
JCU again went on a scoring tear with four unanswered goals to boost its lead to 9-3, before Williams fired in her second goal of the game to help keep the Cards afloat with 10:05 left until halftime. The score for Williams broke the Otterbein single-season record for goals (49), set by Tory Blatt in 2014.
Both teams found the back of the net three times over the final eight minutes of action, with Williams tallying her third score of the night before junior
Veronica Wagner brought the Cards within five goals after netting back-to-back shots.
The Blue Streaks held a 20-12 margin in shots at the break, while both squads played fairly even in shots on goal combining for 24, with the Cardinals holding a 10-9 edge in the ground-ball game.
JCU opened the second half with three-consecutive goals to take a 15-7 lead, but two-straight scores off the stick of Williams and freshman
Izzy Naumovski proved Otterbein was not done yet with over 17 minutes remaining.
The Blue Streaks then took control of the game for good by netting four goals over a span of six minutes to take a double-digit lead with 10:38 left to play.
Williams tacked on the final goal of her collegiate career at the 9:09 mark to make the score 19-10 in favor of JCU, before the Streaks ended the contest on a 3-0 scoring run. The game was also the final one for senior
Jennie Bremer, a four-year member of the Cardinal defense.
Otterbein finished with 16 of its 21 shots on goal, while John Carroll benefited from a 21-13 advantage in draw controls and 29 of its 39 shots coming on goal.
