DELAWARE, Ohio – The No. 21-ranked Otterbein women's soccer team notched a pair of second-half goals to shutout Ohio Wesleyan 2-0 on the road Wednesday night.
The Cardinals, which earned their way into the latest Division III national coaches poll Wednesday afternoon, are now 4-0-1 on the year and are off to their best start through the first five games since the 2012 season when they began the campaign at 4-1.
Otterbein resumed its strong defensive effort to start the season, limiting Ohio Wesleyan to just one score to move its goal differential through five games to 8-2 on the year.
The first half of action featured a scoreless frame despite the Cardinals owning a healthy margin in shots over the Bishops at 14-6, while goalkeeper
Katie Both helped shut down the opposition with a pair of saves.
The Cardinal offense exploded in the second half as its shot total continued to climb, netting back-to-back goals before OWU responded with its first.
Forward
Emily Ganz posted the team's first goal less than two minutes into the second period, firing a shot from 18 yards out that bounced off the far post and into the back of the net. Fellow forward
Priscilla Severance was credited with the assist on Ganz's second goal in as many games.
Severance then flipped the script less than 15 minutes later for her second goal of the year, scoring off a cross by midfielder
Bella Shivley which sailed over the head of OWU goalkeeper Mackenzie Brunke.
OWU inched its way back into the game in the 78th minute, as Megan Price tapped in a rebounded shot to narrow the deficit to 2-1.
Otterbein quickly responded less than 20 seconds later as forward
Isabel Sentle found the back of the net for the first time in her collegiate career off a long pass from defender
Haleigh Guerra.
The Cards protected their lead for the remaining 12 minutes of play, holding the Bishops to just one shot over that span while striking five of their own.
Both picked up her third win goal to move to 3-0-1 on the season, finishing the evening with four saves on nine shots faced. A total of six Cardinal players notched three or more shots, with Shivley leading the way with eight.
The Tan and Cardinal return home Sunday for non-conference matchup against Manchester beginning at 12 p.m. inside Memorial Stadium.
