BLUFFTON, Ohio – The No. 19-ranked Otterbein women's soccer team notched a 3-1 victory over Bluffton on the road Tuesday evening to remain undefeated, as head coach
Brandon Koons, now in his 19th year, notched the 250th win of his career at the helm of the program.
The Cardinals, now 6-0-1 overall on the season, jumped up two spots before the match in the latest national coaches poll released Tuesday evening by the United Soccer Coaches organization.
Lightning and the threat of storms in the area surrounding the Sears Complex resulted in a 70-minute delay to kickoff originally set for 4 p.m.
Otterbein weathered the delay and dominated the shot margin from the get-go, unloading 17 shots in the first half while holding Bluffton to just one thanks to a stellar defensive front.
Midway through the 37th minute junior
Annie Mosca broke the scoreless tie with her second goal of the year, slipping a shot past Beaver goalkeeper Jules Frazier following a dish from freshman
Bella Shivley.
Otterbein took its 1-0 lead into halftime, owning a stellar 17-1 margin in shots to accompany an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. Frazier was kept busy in goal for Bluffton, stopping six of the Cards' shots in the initial frame.
Over 15 minutes passed in the second half before Bluffton equaled the score at one goal apiece. The Cardinals regained their one-goal lead just over 10 minutes later, as Shivley netted her third goal in the last two games, this one coming off classmate
Regina Severance's first collegiate assist.
Otterbein increased its lead to 3-1 in the 71st minute, as freshman
Priscilla Severance found the back of the net for the fourth time this season, following the help of senior
Alyssa Spencer with her first assist of the year.
Severance again boosted the team's lead in the closing minutes, tacking on her fifth score of the year, as sophomore
Megan Losey picked up her third assist in the last two games.
Otterbein ended the match with a 32-3 advantage in shots, making it the third contest in-a-row the Cards have totaled 30 or more shots. Freshman goalkeeper
Katie Both recorded her team-best fourth win in goal for the Cards, saving one shot on a trio of them faced. Frazier finished with 10 shots on the opposite end of the field.
The Tan and Cardinal will welcome a seven-day break from competition before traveling to Hiram for a non-conference matchup next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
