WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The No. 22-ranked Otterbein women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season in a 2-1 overtime thriller against rival Capital on Saturday afternoon in its Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) opener at Memorial Stadium.
The Cardinals (7-1-1 overall) absorb their first non-winning decision of the year after starting the year with an eight-game unbeaten streak, which included five wins in-a-row.
Otterbein and Capital had met five times over the last four years coming into the match, with the Crusaders owning a 4-0-1 record over that span. With the win today the Crusaders have now won five of the last six meeting between the two teams.
Capital opened the game with a score in the seventh minute of action as Carlee Murry corralled a pass through the Cardinal defense from Maggie Peddicord, before slipping the ball into back of the net.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Crusaders at halftime, with Otterbein holding a 9-7 advantage in shots with freshman
Bella Shivley launching four of her own. Capital goalkeeper Kelly Bachmann helped keep the Cardinal offense at-bay, stopping four shots in the initial frame.
Another hard-fought half was in store in the second period, as the Cards again outshot the Crusaders 9-8 with a handful of solid looks on goal.
Otterbein finally broke through in the 82nd minute to tie the score at one goal apiece as freshman
Myiah Kelley sped past a host of Capital defenders to get in position for a deflected shot before she promptly struck past Bachmann in goal.
Overtime featured the game-winning score for Capital as Amanda Kachaylo netted her first score of the year with just five seconds left in the extra frame, scoring off an assist in the box from Chloe Brown.
The Cards finished with a 25-16 lead in shots, seven of which came in overtime. Otterbein goalkeeper
Erin Gordon tallied her first loss of the year between the posts after saving four shots. Bachmann finished with nine saves on the other end for Capital.
Otterbein will look to even its mark in OAC play next Wednesday when it travels to nationally-ranked Ohio Northern. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. in Ada, Ohio.
