NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Otterbein women's basketball team defeated Muskingum, 79-65, Saturday afternoon in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) showdown, as the Cardinals were paced by
Dani Kissel and
Ali Cartnal who combined for 58 points.
Otterbein improves to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in the OAC, while Muskingum drops to 1-9 on the year and 0-4 in the conference.
The Fighting Muskies built their largest lead of the game at 12-4 with 2:27 left in the first quarter, however the Cardinals responded at the end of the period by going on a 13-1 run and led 17-13 after the first 10 minutes.
With 3:47 remaining in the second quarter, Cartnal drove to the hoop and made a layup to give Otterbein its largest lead of the half at 27-17.
Heading into the locker room the Cardinals owned a 27-22 edge, as Cartnal led the charge with 13 points and Kissel added 10 of her own.
Cartnal took over in the third period by rattling off 14 points on 5 of 6 shooting from the floor. Towards the end of the stanza,
Alex Schaffer buried a three-pointer to give Otterbein a 54-40 lead, as the Cardinals recorded a season-high for points in a quarter of 27.
Two minutes into the final period, Cartnal buried her fifth three-pointer to give the Cardinals their largest lead of the game at 18 points.
At the 4:37 mark Cartnal set a new career-high of 32 points by connecting on a mid-range jump shot. The senior guard connected on five free-throws at the end of the game to finish with 37.
Otterbein used its aggressive defense to force 24 turnovers which resulted in 25 points, as freshman
Jenna Hoschouer led the Cardinals by recording six steals
The Cardinals will be back in action Wednesday afternoon as they compete in the St. Petersburg Classic against Penn State Behrend at 1 p.m.
