TAMPA BAY, Fla. – The Otterbein men's basketball team split a pair of games at the 2018 Tampa Bay Shootout and end the calendar season by winning two of their final three games.
Game one: Otterbein – 100, DePauw – 79
Otterbein shined in the sunshine state by setting a new program record of 19 three-pointers in a single game and hit the century mark for the first time in over a decade.
The Cardinals started the game on fire by scoring the first 11 points and never looked back. DePauw would fight back and cut the deficit to five with 10:22 remaining in the first half, however Otterbein scored seven unanswered points to build a 12-point edge.
Maurice Beavers buried a three-pointer right before the end of the half to give the Cards a 52-40 lead, as the 52 points is the most Otterbein has scored in any half this season.
The Cardinals continued their hot shooting in the second half, as the first four baskets were all from behind the arc.
Eddie Anders made the 16th three-pointer of the afternoon with 11:23 left to give the Cardinals a 77-58 lead and breaking the old program record.
The previous record was held by the 2009-10 team when they made 15 against Capital.
Beavers and
Austin Springer led the squad by each tallying 17 points off of the bench, as
Kobe Long-Weber scored a career-high 15.
Game two: Maryville – 72, Otterbein – 61
The Cardinals started the championship game by owning an eight-point advantage midway through the first half, before Maryville trimmed the deficit.
Both squads continued to trade baskets as the lead changed eight times in the first 20 minutes. The Cards would head into the locker room owning a 38-35 edge over the Scots. Long-Weber continued his hot shooting from day one as he went 3 of 5 from the floor for eight points.
Maryville went on a 9-0 run over the course of two minutes to regain the lead at 46-40. The two squads would go back and forth for the next seven minutes, as the Scots held a 57-48 advantage.
Justin Carter made a pair of free throws to make the score 61-58 with slightly over seven minutes to go, as the two teams would go cold from the field with no basket being scored for nearly three minutes of action.
Jay Joseph ended the game by registering his first double-double as a Cardinal with 12 points and 11 rebounds, as Carter led the way with a game-high 16 points. Springer was named to the All-Tournament team, as he finished the weekend with 23 points
Otterbein will travel to Berea to take on Baldwin Wallace this Saturday as start time is set for 3 p.m.
