IRVING, Texas – The Otterbein women's lacrosse team corralled its first win of the season Sunday afternoon in the Lone Star State, opening a 10-1 lead in the first half en route to a comfortable 19-5 victory over Alma College.
The Cardinals, playing their first of three games at University of Dallas, improve to 1-3 on the season and will next take on the host Crusaders come Tuesday at 4 p.m. local time.
Otterbein netted five goals in just over five minutes to begin the game, with two coming from the stick of sophomore
Ema Pusecker. Alma (1-2) scored to temporarily halt the run, but the Cards fired right back with another five goals by the 11:31 mark and eventually went into halftime ahead 13-3.
Both sides traded scoring during the early stages of the second half, with Otterbein holding a sizeable 16-5 lead midway through and then tallying three more goals down the stretch.
The Cards finished with a lopsided 39-11 shot advantage and received multi-goal efforts from five players; Pusecker (4),
Cameron Finnegan (4),
Abby Smoot (3),
Kiera Mulcahy (3) and
Julia Karas (2). Pusecker also dished out three assists to finish with an impressive seven-point day.
Otterbein was a perfect 6 of 6 on free-position attempts, won 15 of the 25 draw controls (eight from Kenna Walquist) and, defensively, forced the Scots into 26 turnovers. Goalies
Tasha Williams and
Allison Rhoads teamed for five saves.
