Box Score NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Otterbein volleyball team came up short on the road against a nationally-ranked team Saturday afternoon, dropping a four-set matchup at No. 15-ranked Muskingum inside the Anne C. Steele Center.
The Cardinals, snapping a seven-match winning streak, fall to 21-5 on the season and a 5-2 mark within the Ohio Athletic Conference. Muskingum secures its tenth victory in a row, meanwhile, improve to 23-2 on the year and 6-1 against the league.
Muskingum led the entire first set, holding a slim 15-13 advantage midway through and keeping the Cards at arm's length down the stretch.
The Muskies never trailed in the second frame either, jumping out to a 9-3 edge and holding off a late Otterbein push. The Cardinals pulled to within 22-20, and again at 23-21, before the hosts found a few timely points.
Otterbein stayed alive with a victory in the third set, which saw ties at 6, 7, 8, 10, 13, 16 and 17 until the Cards posted a critical 5-0 run, capped by a service ace from freshman
Bridget Oder. Otterbein ultimately got back-to-back kills from another freshman,
Anna Donner, to culminate the set.
Muskingum broke open a close fourth set to finish the day, turning an 8-8 deadlock into a 20-12 lead and never looking back. The Muskies hit .299 on the day compared to a .177 clip for Otterbein.
Brooke Fatheree led all players with 18 kills on the home side while Otterbein juniors
Emily Shuk (16) and
Tate Eppard (15) paced the visitors. Oder tied for a match-high 18 digs in the back while classmate
Carlie Craycraft had 44 assists.
The Cards will stay on the road to begin next week, traveling to face nationally-ranked and league-leading Ohio Northern on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
