ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Otterbein softball team swept Mount Union in its Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) opener Saturday afternoon, as the Cardinals hit three home runs in the first game and
Anna Edwards went seven innings and only allowed one run in game two. Otterbein improves to 10-6 overall and 2-0 in the conference, as Mount Union drops to 10-6 on the year and 0-2 in the OAC.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME ONE: OTTERBEIN – 9, MOUNT UNION – 5
- Hannah Dobrinick started the scoring in the first inning by hitting a two-run shot to deep center field to put Otterbein ahead 2-0.
- Mount Union responded by scoring three unanswered runs, until Katrina Wierzbicki came up to bat in the third inning and smashed another two-run homer to give Otterbein a 4-3 edge.
- The Purple Raiders tied the game at 4-4 after three innings of action. The Cardinals turned a triple play in the fourth inning with the score tied 4-4, then responded by scoring two runs in the top of the fifth. Once again, Wierzbicki came up to bat in the fifth inning and hit her second home run of the afternoon to give the Cardinals a 6-4 lead.
- The final two-run homer came from Maria Herron in the sixth inning to Otterbein an 8-5 advantage. Sage Jenkins added an insurance run in the seventh with a double to left field to score Kayla Queer.
GAME TWO: OTTERBEIN – 4, MOUNT UNION – 1
- The senior pitcher Edwards cruised inside the circle by throwing seven innings, allowed one run and recorded five strikeouts.
- Dobrinick once again put the Cardinals on the scoreboard in the first inning with an RBI single to left field which scored Alyson Shaw.
- Hannah Lewis added the second run of game two in the fourth inning by hitting a single to center field and scoring Jenkins.
- Mount Union made it interesting in the seventh by having runners on second and third with one out and scored its first run of the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The four home runs in one game is the most since last season when the team hit five against John Carroll on April 21.
- Herron and Wierzbicki are currently are tied for second in the OAC with three home runs each and trail a duo from Muskingum for the most in conference by a single homer.
- This marks the second time this season that Edwards pitched all seven innings in a winning effort.
- Dobrinick went 5 of 7 with four RBIs, as Wierzbicki set a season-high of four RBIs in game one of the doubleheader.
