Cardinals Swept by Saints in Shortened Day


WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein softball team was swept Thursday afternoon by Thomas More, as game two of the doubleheader was called due to daylight. The Cardinals fall to 10-8 overall, while the Saints improve to 15-7 and have now won 10-straight games.
 
GAME ONE: THOMAS MORE – 10, OTTERBEIN – 0  
GAME TWO: THOMAS MORE – 5, OTTERBEIN 3 (FINAL / 5 INN. DAYLIGHT)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In game one, Thomas More jumped ahead of the Cardinals by scoring two runs in the first inning. The Saints had the based loaded in the second inning, as senior pitcher Gabby Johnson was able to get out of the jam.
  • The Saints added four more runs in the fifth inning, as Sage Jenkins recorded the first Cardinal hit in the bottom half of the frame.
  • In game two, Jenkins crushed a two-run homer in the third inning to give Otterbein its first lead of the afternoon.
  • Johnson once again got the start and went four innings before Anna Edwards and Alex McComb came on in relief.  
  • Thomas More responded in the fifth inning by scoring all five runs off of four hits. The Cardinals answered in the bottom half as Edwards doubled to right center field.
  • After the fifth inning the game was called due to the daylight and Thomas More earned the sweep over Otterbein.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • The 10 runs in game one was the first time this season an opponent scored double-digit runs. 
  • Johnson started both games of a doubleheader for the third time in her career, as the first set came in the NCAA Tournament against DePauw and Alma. 
  • Jenkins hit her first career home run in game two, as the freshman ended the day with two hits and two RBIs.
  • In game two, Katrina Wierzbicki went 3-3 and scored two runs.
UP NEXT:
The Cardinals will host Muskingum, who is currently ranked 25th in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll, for a doubleheader on Saturday with the first pitch set for 1 p.m.
