MARIETTA, Ohio – The Otterbein softball split an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader against Marietta Tuesday afternoon, as
Gabby Johnson threw seven shutout innings in game one and came on relief in the second game.
The Cardinals now hold an overall record of 11-9 and a 3-1 OAC mark, while Marietta improves to 14-10 and 3-3 record in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME ONE: OTTERBEIN – 3, MARIETTA – 0
- Johnson led the Cardinals in the circle by throwing seven shutout innings and recording eight strikeouts.
- Maria Herron led Otterbein at the dish by registering two RBIs, as he runs came in the second and fourth inning courtesy of the sophomore.Â
- Savannah McCoppin went 2 of 3 with a double and scored one of the three Cardinal runs. Â
GAME TWO: MARIETTA – 6, OTTERBEIN – 4
- Kayla Queer hit a home run to left field to give Otterbein a 2-0 advantage in the second inning.Â
- The Pioneers would respond in the following inning by tying the score at 2-2, as the Marietta attack continued in the fourth by adding four more runs and led 6-2.Â
- In the fifth inning, Alyson Shaw had a 3-1 count and singled to left field to score McCoppin and cut the deficit to two runs.
- Johnson came on in relief midway through the game and was able to slow down the Pioneer attack, as Otterbein was unable to tally any runs in the sixth or seventh.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- This was Johnson's first complete shutout of the 2019 season and the 14th shutout of her career.Â
- The Cardinals followed the same script from a season ago by winning the first game and dropping the second.
- Queer's home run in game two was the first of her career, as the junior went 4 of 7 for the afternoon. Courtney Hackney went 2 for 3 and recorded a third of the Cardinals hits.
