Softball Splits With Wilmington in OAC Matchup

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Otterbein softball team split an doubleheader with Wilmington Wednesday afternoon, as the Cardinals have now won four of their last five Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) games.

Wilmington now falls to 15-9 overall and 3-7 in the league, while Otterbein improves to 15-11 and 7-3 in the conference. The Cardinals are now tied with No. 24 Baldwin Wallace for third in the conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME ONE: OTTERBEIN - 8, WILMINGTON – 1
  • Otterbein started the game on fire, as the Sage Jenkins doubled down the left field line to score Maria Herron and Alyson Shaw.
  • Later in the inning, Courtney Hackney ripped her fourth double of the season to give the Cardinals a 4-0 lead after one inning.
  • In the second inning, the bases were loaded with one out as Kayla Queer stepped up to the plate. The junior would get hit by a pitch and record an RBI for Otterbein.
  • Anna Edwards, Alex McComb and Savannah McCoppin all added a run for insurance in the frame.
  • Gabby Johnson had more than enough run support, as the senior allowed one hit and run in six innings of action. McComb would come on in the seventh inning to close out the game.

GAME TWO: WILMINGTON - 4, OTTERBEIN - 3
  • Wilmington quickly put game one in the rear view mirror, as the Fightin' Quakers scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Wilmington would add one more run in the next inning to build a 4-0 edge.
  • Otterbein slowly chipped at the Wilmington lead, as Katrina Wierzbicki hit a double in the third inning to score Savannah McCoppin
  • In the fourth inning, McComb would single to right field to score pinch-runner Sami Ange to make the score 4-2 in favor of Wilmington.
  • Herron started the seventh inning with a solo home run to cut the deficit to a single run. Wierzbicki would single to center field, but would be left on base as the Cardinal's comeback fell short.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Otterbein owns an impressive 6-2 record on the road this season, with the two losses coming by a combined three runs.
