WESTERVILLE, Ohio - The Otterbein softball team came away with a split against Ohio Northern Tuesday afternoon, as the Cardinals lost game one in extra innings before winning game two in five frames. Ohio Northern is now 19-11 on the year and 12-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), while Otterbein is 19-13 overall and 10-4 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME ONE: OHIO NORTHERN – 6, OTTERBEIN – 3 (9 INN.)
- The Cardinals scored in the first frame, as Alyson Shaw ripped a double to right center field. Katrina Wierzbicki reached base on a bunt attempt, and Shaw saw an opportunity and rounded third base to score the opening run.
- Ohio Northern got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning, as Hailee Loughman fouled off a sac bunt attempt. On the next pitch, she ripped a doubled off the fence in right field to put runners on second and third.
- The Polar Bears would tag three runs in the fourth frame to take a 3-1 lead. The Cardinals had runners on second and third, as Maria Herron had a hard hit line drive to the left fielder to end the inning.
- With two outs in the seventh inning, Herron and Shaw both reached base on infield singles. Wierzbicki came up to the plate and tied the game with a double of the fence in center field.
- The Polar Bears took advantage of one miscue in the ninth, as ONU scored three unearned runs to take a 6-3 lead.
GAME TWO: OTTERBEIN - 12, OHIO NORTHERN 4 (5 INN.)
- Ohio Northern jumped out to 4-0 lead two innings into the game. Otterbein erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the second, as Kayla Queer started the scoring party with a single through the right side to score two runs.
- Shaw, Herron, and Savannah McCoppin all tallied an RBI throughout the frame, as Hannah Dobrinick ended the scoring with a three-run homer to left field.
- Pitcher Alex McComb helped her own cause in the fifth inning with a solo home run to left field. Herron added two more RBIs in the fifth, as the sophomore drove in McCoppin and Alyson McAdams.
- Courtney Hackney had the 12th and final RBI of the afternoon by drawing a walk with a bases loaded.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The 12 runs in game two is the most the Cardinals have scored since last season against Heidelberg in the OAC Tournament.
- McComb earned her first victory after throw 3.1 innings of shutout action, as the junior only allowed two hits in the circle.
- After stealing three bases the Cardinals are now 28-33 on the year, good for 85 percent success rate.
- Shaw has now recorded a hit in 11-straight games, as the senior has had seven multi-hit games in that span.
