WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein softball team swept Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) foe Heidelberg Saturday afternoon, as
Alyson Shaw hit a walk-off single in game two of the doubleheader. The Cardinals improve to 14-10 overall and 6-2 in the league, while Heidelberg falls to 8-13 on the year and 3-5 in the conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME ONE: OTTERBEIN – 10, HEIDELBERG – 0 (5 INNINGS)
- The Cardinals were clicking on all cylinders, as Gabby Johnson earned her eighth victory of the season by throwing four shutout innings.
- At the plate, Otterbein jumped all over Stephanie Drapp by scoring three runs in the first inning. The Cardinal success continued in the second frame, as Shaw and Katrina Wierzbicki each recorded an RBI.
- Courtney Hackney ripped a line drive to left centerfield that cleared the fence to give Otterbein a 7-0 lead.
- In the fourth inning, the trio of Wierzbicki, Hackney and Alyson McAdams all had an RBI with hits down the left-field line.
GAME TWO: OTTERBEIN – 4, HEIDELBERG – 3 (9 INNINGS)
- Johnson came on in relief in the third inning and had eight strikeouts, while only allowing three hits.
- Kayla Queer blasted a solo home run to deep center field to put Otterbein on the scoreboard in the fourth inning.
- With runners in scoring position, Sage Jenkins came up to bat and hit a rocket down the third-base line to tie the score at 3-3 in the fifth frame.
- In the ninth inning, Shaw stepped up to the plate and hit a single to right field for the walk-off winner.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Johnson now has not allowed a single run in nine of her 19 appearances this season.
- Freshman Savannah McCoppin has now recorded a hit in eight of the last nine games.
- Shaw has 10 hits in her last 11 plate appearances, which is good for a ridiculous .909 batting average.
- Shaw's hit in the bottom of the ninth, was the first walk-off winner this season for the Cardinals.
