WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Cardinal men's soccer team made it four-straight victories Wednesday night inside Memorial Stadium, netting a pair of early goals against Denison and ultimately playing to a 3-0 victory.
Otterbein, moving to a record of 6-2 on the season, will finish out the week and its non-conference schedule come Saturday afternoon at Case Western. The team will then have a full week off before launching Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play against Mount Union.
Wildly enough, the Cardinals had scored their last 10 goals all in the second half before the early firepower against Denison (3-4-1). Otterbein had gone five full games without a score before intermission.
That streak ended in the 38th minute here, as upstart freshman
Gabe Sharrock continued his recent production by heading in a cross from senior
Tiger Pham into a crowded box. Sharrock also scored the lone and game-winning goal in the 82nd minute over the weekend to beat No. 22-ranked Brockport.
Otterebein wasted little time doubling its lead, getting another less than three minutes later at 40:01 off a free kick. Pham sent a sharp pass into the box once again, which was headed by Sharrock and then quickly redirected by senior Erick Stucky right in front of the goal.
Senior goalkeeper Collin Hoffman made five saves throughout the first half as the Cards took that 2-0 lead into the break.
The Cardinals added onto their lead early in the second half when
Liam Heard found an unmarked
Pau Piang on a backside cross for an easy low and away finish. The Otterbein defense played tough the remainder of the way, posting its fourth straight clean sheet in the victory.
Hoffmann finished with eight saves for an Otterbein team that out shot the visiting Big Red 20-13.
The Cardinals finish up their non-conference schedule Saturday, heading to Case Western for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
