BEREA, Ohio- Women's basketball returned to action Saturday afternoon, traveling north again for a match up against nationally ranked No. 14 Baldwin Wallace. Coming off its first Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) loss of the season, Otterbein was unable to find a rhythm falling to the Yellow Jackets, 71-53.
The Cardinals, playing without two starters, trailed at halftime, and were unable to climb back into the game. The loss drops the Cards to 9-4 overall, and 4-2 within the OAC. With the win Baldwin Wallace improves to 12-1 on the season, and 6-0 to remain atop the conference standings.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Otterbein started strong, taking a 9-3 lead at 6:26 in the first quarter. Following a Baldwin Wallace timeout the Cards failed to score the remainder of the opening quarter, and found themselves trailing 18-9 at the end of the first 10 minutes, following a 15-0 Yellow Jacket run.
- The Cards got back on the scoreboard at 8:44 in the second quarter when Abbie Scholz split a pair of free throws. The Yellow Jackets kept their foot on the gas, expanding the lead to 34-16 at halftime.
- Each team scored 37 points in the second half, but the Yellow Jacket lead was too much to overcome for the shorthanded Cardinals.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Cardinals rolled out a new starting five for the first time this season, with Scholz taking the reigns, scoring a team-high 14 points, while Abby Zerkle added 13.
- The Yellow Jackets got a game-high 21 points from Hannah Fecht in just 14 minutes of action.
- Baldwin Wallace converted on 11 of 28 shots behind the arch, while the Cards managed just 3-10.
