WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Otterbein dropped a fast-paced matchup with visiting Wilmington during Ohio Athletic Conference women's basketball action in the Rike Center Wednesday night, staying within striking distance but never getting over the hump in an 88-78 defeat.
The Cardinals, dropping their third game in OAC play, fall to 9-5 on the season and 4-3 against the league. Wilmington improves itself to 8-6 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Quakers led 19-15 after the opening quarter, but exploded for 29 points in the second to ultimately carry a 48-33 lead into the break. Point guard Zahrya Bailey went coast-to-coast off a made free throw in just a few seconds to end the first half.
- Wilmington was whistled for five fouls in the early going of the third quarter, putting Otterbein in the bonus and providing a little momentum. The Cards got to within 62-55 after a three pointer from Abby Zerkle before the Quakers scored nine of the final 13 points in the third frame, taking a 71-59 edge into the home stretch.
- Otterbein slice the lead to eight points on multiple occasions, but could never get any closer after the 3:52 mark.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Wilmington went 25 of 36 at the free-throw line while Otterbein finished 14 of 19.
- Angelia Jackson scored a team-high 18 for Otterbein while Peyton McCord posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. She had seven offensive boards as the Cards held a 25-7 advantage on second-chance points.
- Abbie Scholz scored 12 points in 21 minutes, playing most of the game in foul trouble. She picked up her fifth with 8:25 left in regulation.
- Abby Zerkle had 13 points for Otterbein, as she and Jackson combined to go 6 for 8 from downtown.
- Mckayla Binkley led all players with 23 points for Wilmington, which came in averaging over 82 per game as a group. Kelly Noll snagged a game-high 13 rebounds as the Quakers snapped a four-game losing skid in the series.

Otterbein will culminate the week on the road, heading to Alliance come Saturday afternoon for a contest with Mount Union at 3 p.m.
