Softball Sweeps Day One of the Fast Pitch Dreams Classic

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.- The offense shined just as bright as the sun on day one for Otterbein softball, which scored 16 runs over two games, collecting two wins on day one of the Fast Pitch Dreams Classic. The Cardinals started the 2020 campaign with a bang, downing Hilbert 8-0 in five innings, following it up with another strong outing in an 8-3 victory over Cedar Crest.

GAME ONE:

The Cards jumped all over Hilbert in their first chance to bat of the season, capitalizing on two back-to-back walks thanks to a Hannah Dobrinick sacrifice fly. The scoring came quickly after that with Courtney Hackney driving one in, followed by a Sami Ange double that plated two more.

Otterbein faired just as well in the bottom of the second, plating three more runs thanks to a Jess Gunter single up the middle, a run walked in and another RBI on a single from Savannah McCoppin.

The defense shined just as bright, especially the pitching duo of Gunter and Erin Vonderwell. Gunter got the day started for the Cards, pitching two innings without giving up a hit and striking out one batter to earn the win in the 5 inning game. Vonderwell came on in the third and was just as good, giving up a lone hit while striking out five to close things out for the first win of 2020.

GAME TWO:

Otterbein picked up right where it left off, scoring in the first inning on another Dobrinick single that drove in Katrina Wierzbicki. The Cards gave up two runs in the bottom of the first but quickly answered in the second to tie things back up at two.

In the third the Cards broke things open, scoring three times thanks to a sacrifice fly from Sage Jenkins and back-to-back RBI singles to left field from Alex McComb and Hackney. Otterbein added another two runs in the fourth, and its final score of the day came in the seventh when Isabelle Fisher earned her first career RBI on a single that ripped past the short stop.

McComb made the start in game two, going five innings, allowing two runs on eight hits with one strikeout to earn the win. Fisher made her collegiate pitching debut coming on in relief in the sixth inning, giving up one run on one hit while striking out one batter.

UP NEXT:

The Cards will return to action tomorrow taking on Muhlenberg at 9:30 a.m., followed by game two against Wilkes at 3:30 p.m.
