WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Otterbein exacted revenge against Marietta in record-breaking fashion Saturday night inside the Rike Center, blowing out the Pioneers 108-75 and setting a new program-best for most points in a single game.
The Cardinals, dropping a tough 82-80 decision in Marietta last evening, now stand 1-1 on the young season following the home opener on campus. No typical crowd was present due to ongoing CoVID-19 protocols, although nearly 100 "cardboard-cutout fans" soaked in the game court-side.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Otterbein, which fell behind 29-10 on Friday, flipped the script by opening a 31-12 lead in the first quarter and never looking back.
Â
- The Cards ballooned that margin to a 44-17 midway through the second quarter and ultimately carried a 53-33 advantage into halftime, shooting nearly 60 percent from the field.
Â
- Marietta never got within 20 points moving forward. Otterbein opened a 32-point cushion early in the fourth and coasted down the stretch.
Â
- Sophomore Natalie Galaida, a transfer from rival Capital, buried consecutive three-pointers in the closing minutes to move Otterbein from 102 to 108.
Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The previous single-game record of 106 was set against Muskingum back during the 2005-06 campaign.
Â
- Abby Zerkle scored 21 to lead four Cardinals in double figures. Angelia Jackson and Katie McCrary both had 16, Bryn Mangold scored 12, and three others all scored nine.
Â
- Both teams surpassed 40 bench points.
Â
- Otterbein shot over 57 percent for the night compared to just a .309 output from Marietta. The Cards were a blistering 12 of 15 behind the arc.
Â
- Otterbein outscored Marietta 40-15 on the fast break over the two weekend games.
